Safe Families for Children is a national movement partnering with the church to temporarily care for at-risk children, while strengthening families in crisis. Our purpose is to serve as a hosts for vulnerable children and to create extended family-like support systems for desperate families through a community of compassionate volunteers motivated by their faith to keep children safe and ultimately together with their families.
What We Do
SFFC, an alternative to foster care placement when abuse and neglect are not present, provides a connection between the church family and desperate families in the community. Parents in need voluntarily place their children with host families for a temporary length of time while parents focus on becoming more stable and meeting their goals. Host families are recruited through local Christian churches and faith-based organizations.
How Does Safe Families Work
Safe Families for Children partners with churches to recruit, screen, train, and empower volunteers to serve families in crisis. SFFC removes the burden of isolation and builds meaningful relationships with families in need through trained volunteers who care for children and their families. SFFC volunteer roles include Ministry Leads, Family Coaches, Host Families, Family Friends, and Resource Family Friends.
- Parents retain full custody and can request the return of their children at any time
- Volunteer families are extensively screened with fingerprint background checks and home evaluations
- Children ages 0-18 are eligible, including parenting teens
- We are committed to reuniting parents and children as soon as possible
- There are no costs for SFFC Services
- Parents can request the return of their child at any time
- Prevent child maltreatment
- Deflect at-risk families from entering into the child welfare system
- Stabilizing and strengthening families in crisis.
We work to utilize and equip churches to recruit host families who will serve as alternatives to foster care by opening their home to children in need and developing a mentoring relationship to the parents.
Founded in Chicago in 2003, Safe Families for Children (SFFC) is a multi-site movement that gives hope and support to families in distress. SFFC reframes how families are supported during a crisis. Parents primarily place their children in a safe, loving home where they are cared for while the parents seek to restore stability in their lives. SFFC is dedicated to family support, stabilization, and most importantly, child abuse prevention. In 2012, SFFC made 33,200 family hosting arrangements in 26 states across the country. As of 2018, SFFC is active over 40 states with 108 chapters, and has hosted over 35,000 in the U.S. It is now an international movement.
Our Local Stories
Our Referral Process –
Safe Families for Children is a self-referred agency, meaning families must need and want to use SFFC services and call us directly when possible. However, many community services call us on behalf of families and we are happy to explain our services and intake process.
To refer a family to SFFC – West GA call our Intake Line at (706) 616- 8028. This line is open 24/7; however, it is important you leave a message when calling.
Our Intake Process –
SFFC staff schedules a meeting with the families in need to explain the SFFC program, services, and to match families with appropriate services. Families who choose to accept SFFC services are given an intake packet which includes:
- Parent Letter – Parent Intake Letter
- Parent Information Letter – Parent Information Form (1)
- Child Information Form – includes any allergies, medical issues, interests, likes and dislikes Child Intake Information Form
Once our staff determines the family’s situation is a good fit for SFFC services, we work to match the right Host Family with the family in need. When a Host Family is matched, our staff schedules a meeting for the two families to meet. Before placement begins, families fill out and sign the following forms for each child. These forms give the Host Family permission to care for their child.
Temporary Placement Agreement – Gives us permission to care
Power of Attorney for Healthcare Only – For treatment of emergencies only
SFFC works to unify families with their children as soon as possible; and is diligent to allow parents to visit their child as often as possible. SFFC is committed to keeping a child’s life as normal as possible and in the same school with their friends and teachers.
