Our Program
Program Purpose
Owens Cottage exemplifies Twin Cedars’ mission, “to provide programs and services empowering children, youth, and families to achieve optimum potential.” Licensed by the Office of Regulatory Services, this residential program for female youth provides a client-centered, home-like atmosphere with a focus on independent living. While placed at Owens, youth are encouraged to safely explore avenues for changing unhealthy or self-defeating behaviors and attitudes.
What We Do
At Owens Cottage, residents attend public school and receive outpatient mental health services which include school, group, and individual counseling, social skills training, youth development, educational counseling, leisure and recreational activities, dentist/doctor appointments, home visits, and various activities/events. The group home milieu emphasizes use of positive peer culture and community service projects to strengthen residents’ ability to self-govern and help others.
Who We Serve
Owens Cottage serves up to 16 severely emotionally disturbed girls ages 13-17.
Our Goal
To work with youth on developing the skills necessary to successfully transition home with family, home with a foster or adoptive family, and/or to independent living.
Our History
Owens Cottage was established in 2004 and was previously situated on the Magnolias Campus of Twin Cedars Youth and Family Services, Inc. This neighborhood was built in 2003 by a group of volunteers, led by President Jimmy Carter. Twin Cedars is proud to call the Magnolias Campus home to several of our programs. The Owens Cottage was originally named Annette Boyd Group Home for Annette Boyd, who was a force for good in the LaGrange community. She was known for her patriotic dress, and could often be seen wearing red, white, and blue. Sadly, Ms. Boyd is no longer with us, having passed away in 2003.
