Meriwether Youth LeadershipProgram Information

PARTICIPANTS:
Participants in the Twin Cedars’ Meriwether Youth Leadership and Service Program will be ninth to eleventh grade teens in public and private schools, or home schooled students in Meriwether County.

Applicants may be nominated by a teacher, administrator, counselor, religious or civic leader.

When considering a participant to nominate, look for youth who have:

  1. Demonstrated leadership qualities through their actions through service to school, church, civic or youth activities.3
  2. Shown initiative, enthusiasm.
  3. Shown integrity of character.
  4. Shown interest in people.
  5. Shown potential for contributing to the program.
MISSION:
The Twin Cedars’ Meriwether Youth Leadership and Service Program’s mission is to develop and enhance existing and emerging youth leader’s leadership capacities, as well as expand their knowledge of the community in order to impact on the identified issues of alcohol, tobacco and other drug usage, sexual activity, and dropping out of school.

PROGRAMS:
Students who are selected as participants in the Twin Cedars’ Meriwether Youth Leadership and Service Program will be expected to attend a retreat in January and four other sessions whose focus will include organized training programs to develop leadership skills necessary to address issues of concern to teens. These sessions will be scheduled after school hours, on weekends or teacher workdays.

Participants can expect to be trained by leadership development professionals, be involved in group discussion, participate in presentations, benefit from guest speakers, and become actively involved in the session topics.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Participants in the Twin Cedars’ Meriwether Youth Leadership and Service Program are selected after consideration of their recognized and potential leadership and the merit of their application. The selection committee will then strive to achieve a geographical, racial, and socioeconomic balance in its selection.

At the conclusion of the Twin Cedars’ Meriwether Youth Leadership and Service Program, participants will educate middle/high school youth grades 6-12 on the consequences of alcohol, tobacco and other drug usage, sexual activity, and dropping out of school through public forums focus groups and mentoring.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance at the retreat is mandatory due to the group cohesiveness that results from this program. Attendance at all other programs is required. If an emergency arises, a written explanation must be submitted to the Youth Leadership Board. The Board will determine if it is excused. If more than one program is missed, the student will not graduate and will be expected to make the work up the following year.
