Camp Viola

Camp ViolaThe mission of Camp Viola is to construct, maintain and operate camps, playground and recreation facilities for the promotion of the spiritual, mental and physical welfare of the children residing in Troup County.

Camp Viola is an overnight, Christ centered, residential summer camp featuring fun, healthy activities for children ages eight to twelve. Established in 1927 by Miss Viola Burks (June 28, 1887 - October 6, 1947) (pictured) , this 188-acre camping environment has long served the needs of children. The camp has proven over the years to be uplifting to children through their schedule of learning activities and play, a chance for wholesome food and fresh air, new social contacts and spiritual guidance.

Camp Viola provides week-long summer camps for youth. The majority of these youth come from high-risk neighborhoods and economically challenged homes that would not have an opportunity to experience a summer camp if not for Camp Viola. Prosocial behaviors are modeled. The give-and-take experience of living in a group occurs.

Twin Cedars began managing the camp for the Camp Viola Board, another non-profit organization and a United Way organization, in 1998. The camp has become a 6-10 ten week program providing opportunities for spiritual, interpersonal, educational and individual growth. Volunteers from local churches and organizations provide daily activities including hiking, swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, a daily worship service, social skills and personal hygiene classes, volleyball, football, softball, canoeing and outdoor education. Three meals a day and snacks are provided. All meals are USDA approved.

The camp is a structured setting for youth to feel safe, have fun and learn. Strong community support plays a significant role in Camp Viola being a success.

During the summer months an estimated 500-600 youth will enjoy camp.
