Programs & Services Twin Cedars has been tackling the social woes of child abuse for many years – one out of every four girls today in the United States, our State as well, are abused; and one out of every five boys are abused by the age of 18.
The over eighty youth that reside in one of our homes must, due to changes in State funding, receive treatment at a locale other than their residence. Therapists are located at the Coleman Center to provide individual, group and family therapy. In the near future, we hope to serve many others in need throughout the community.
In 2002, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Troup County became a program under the Twin Cedars’ umbrella. The Child Advocacy Center is now located at the Coleman Center providing the following services:
provides a safe and child-friendly environment for the evaluation of child abuse cases
works closely with all arms of law enforcement and the Department of Family and Children Services in the investigation of child abuse cases
conducts forensic interviews on child victims of suspected sexual abuse and extreme physical abuse
when a child is sexually assaulted, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) evaluates the child
conducts court-sanctioned supervised family visitations between children in foster care and families who are trying to regain physical custody of their children
Twin Cedars’ Advocacy Center Coordinator, serves as the chair of the local countywide Child Abuse Protocol and the Child Fatality Review Panel
Twin Cedars’ work with pregnant and parenting teens now exceeds over 100 moms! Ninety-five percent do not have a second pregnancy while a teen and over ninety-five percent obtain a G.E.D. or complete high school. Troup County graduation rate hovers around 70% and only 14% of youth in foster care in the State of Georgia graduate high school on time. The Circle of Care program uses a case management approach to provide assistance to pregnant and parenting teens in Troup County. The program was developed through a collaborative effort to reduce the rate of repeat pregnancies to teen parents in our community. The Circle of Care program was created in 1997 and is currently funded by the Department of Human Resources’ Promoting Safe and Stable Families Program. Some services include case management, transportation assistance, home-based and center-based parenting education, and child and family assessment.
Preventing problems before they become a full blown crisis of maladaptive behavior pattern is prudent. Twin Cedars offers a program to parents and teens, Comprehensive Awareness Program (CAP) to families whose teen has behaved in such a manner as to be brought to the attention of the juvenile court. Through six, 3-hour long joint sessions spanning six weeks, over 60% of these families do not experience further juvenile court involvement. These classes are taught at the Coleman Center.
The Parents as Teachers program is located in the Coleman Center. They provide information, support and encouragement that parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life. They also work with parents to:
Personal visits in which Parent Educators
share age-appropriate child development information with parents
observe and show parents how to properly observe child
address parenting concerns
engage the family in activities that provide meaningful parent/child interaction
Group Meetings
parents are able to share information about parenting issues and child development
support each other
observe child playing with other children
practice parenting skills
Screenings
provide for early identification of developmental delays by screening for developmental, health, vision, and hearing
regular review of child’s developmental progress to identify strengths and/or concerns
refer to follow-up services, if needed
Resource Network
help families connect with needed resources in and around community
Parent Educators establish ongoing relationships with other organizations that serve families
Twin Cedars has approximately 300 staff that require thousands of training hours each year. New employees receive a thorough new employee orientation. The Coleman Center offers a large room to provide this training.
Many meetings are held at the Coleman Center to include; the Twin Cedars Board of Directors, the Twin Cedars Foundation Board of Directors and the Camp Viola Board of Directors that meet regularly, as well as the many meetings Twin Cedars hosts and/or chair such as the Child Fatality Review Board and Troup County Prevention Coalition.
Other behavioral health services available at Coleman Center for children and adolescents include:
Nursing health services to support the general wellness of the child, psychologically and physically
Crisis Intervention services which are designed to support a child who is experiencing an abrupt and substantial change in behavior and the personal distress that goes along with that change
Community Support services that help children and families gain access to services and skills they need as well as create environments that support the child emotionally, functionally and developmentally
Physician care which provides medical and psychiatric services
The renovation and long term lease of the Coleman Community Center was made possible through a grant from the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation, Inc.
